Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Research Design (BERD) Methods Core
The BERD Methods Core has two main objectives: to help investigators identify methodologists for collaboration; and to build teams of faculty and staff methodologists who work with an interdisciplinary network of clinical and translational investigators.
Duke AI Health collaborates closely with the BERD Methods Core to help connect researchers with the most appropriate quantitative methodologists for collaboration around AI research and practice, including the AI Health+BERD Analytics Hub.
Collaborative to Advance Clinical Health Equity (CACHE)
Duke Health’s Collaborative to Advance Clinical Health Equity (CACHE) is a community-driven initiative that is harnessing the power of data science to identify and eliminate racial disparities in healthcare. CACHE uses health equity as a new lens for understanding quality in patient experiences and outcomes.
Duke AI Health serves as the administrative home for the CACHE initiative.
Center for Computational Thinking
The Center for Computational Thinking (CCT) enables computational education at Duke to ensure that every student, regardless of field of study, is prepared for the digital 21st century. Through partnerships with faculty, programs, and departments spanning a wide range of disciplines including data science, cybersecurity, policy, and ethics, we bring computational learning experiences and opportunities to the Duke community and beyond.
CCT has generously supported the AI Health Community of Practice, including the spring 2023 and fall 2023 Health Data Science poster showcases.
Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI)
CTSI’s Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (BIDS) Pillar mission is to To deliver tomorrow’s care to our patients today, using innovative, transformative biomedical informatics, data science, analytical methods, and education that drives exceptional healthcare for all.
The BIDS Pillar is directed by Duke AI Health’s Michael Pencina and co-directed by Shelley Rusincovitch.
Health AI Evaluation & Governance
Duke Health AI Evaluation & Governance is dedicated to evaluating and overseeing algorithms integrated into healthcare practices, including Duke Health’s flagship initiative of Algorithmic-based Clinical Decision Support (ABCDS), the “people-process-technology” framework for the governance and evaluation of clinical algorithms created for use at Duke Health.
Duke AI Health served as the administrative home and early incubator for the ABCDS program from the time of its original chartering in 2021 through 2024. This important institutional foundation grew into the larger initiative of Duke Health AI Evaluation and Governance, which was launched in 2024 as a stand-alone entity now supported by the Duke Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI).
HUMAINE: Fostering AI Research Health Equity and Learning Transformation: A Duke University School of Nursing AI Resource
The HUMAINE initiative within the Duke University School of Nursing fosters both education and research.
Education: Propel nursing and health professionals education towards achieving health equity by leveraging innovative AI-powered tools, fostering a future generation of nurses equipped with AI literacy, competency, and a deep commitment to eradicating disparities in healthcare.
Research: Empower nurses as researchers who drive advancements in health equity through innovative AI-powered tools and methodologies, enabling them to conduct high-impact research that addresses disparities and improves health outcomes for all communities.
Duke AI Health is a key partner and supporter of the HUMAINE initiative, and has supported production of events including the 2024 Duke Symposium on Fostering AI/ML Research for Health Equity and Learning Transformation.

Duke’s Pratt School of Engineering is a community that defines excellence in engineering education, research and service to society.
Duke AI Health has a strong partnership with Pratt which includes co-hosting the Duke Summit on AI for Health Innovation.
